This Day in History - Space Challenger Explosion, 1/28/1986

Today, January 28th, marks the 37th anniversary of the tragic space shuttle Challenger explosion. On this day in 1986, the Challenger, NASA's second space shuttle to enter service, was set to launch on its tenth mission, STS-51-L. The mission was to be the first time a civilian, school teacher Christa McAuliffe, would fly in space. However, just 73 seconds into the flight, the Challenger broke apart, killing all seven crew members on board.

The Challenger explosion was a devastating event for the nation, and for NASA, as it was the first in-flight failure of a space shuttle. The cause of the explosion was determined to be a faulty O-ring seal on one of the solid rocket boosters, which allowed hot gases to escape and ultimately led to the destruction of the Challenger.

Following the disaster, NASA conducted a thorough investigation and implemented new safety measures to prevent a similar tragedy from occurring in the future. The space shuttle program was put on hold for nearly three years while NASA made changes to the design and construction of the shuttles.

The Challenger crew members, Francis R. (Dick) Scobee, Michael J. Smith, Ellison Onizuka, Judith A. Resnik, Ronald E. McNair, Gregory B. Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe, will always be remembered for their dedication and sacrifice in the pursuit of scientific discovery and space exploration. Their legacy continues to inspire future generations of astronauts and scientists.

Today, we honor the memory of the Challenger crew and the families they left behind. We also remember the lessons learned from this tragedy, and the importance of continuing to strive for safety and excellence in space exploration.

In memory of the Challenger crew, NASA and other organizations hold a moment of silence and memorials to remember and honor the sacrifice of the Challenger crew. Let us also take a moment to remember the Challenger crew and their families and the sacrifices they made for the advancement of humanity's understanding of space.
